Volcano Youth Company
For ages 15-21. Immerse yourself in devising and improvising, physical theatre and contemporary drama. You will create your own performances as part of an ensemble, with the support and direction of experienced theatre professionals, and have the chance to perform in public.
Volcano Youth Company provides an opportunity for young people to explore their ideas, inspire one another, and discover new skills. The emphasis is on enabling the participants to unlock their creativity through experimentation in performance and to build trust and confidence (in themselves and one another) in a supportive professional environment. We challenge young people with improvisational tasks that require practical, imaginative participation. Volcano aims to equip young performers with the tools and the skills to think and move for themselves with confidence and to embrace risk and vulnerability in a collaborative setting.
Volcano Youth Company is led by Paul Davies, Volcano Theatre’s Artistic Director, and Catherine Bennett, Choreographer and Movement Director. At Volcano Theatre in Swansea High Street.
A parent/guardian’s consent will be required for under-18s.
We are aiming for a company that represents the diversity young people in South Wales in terms of ethnicity, gender, sexuality, disability and socio-economic background. If you require any assistance on the workshop day or have any access needs, then please let us know when you apply.
Volcano Youth Company was started in 2016 and has produced four original performances (The Thermidorians, WeReallyWantToWinButWeDontWantToTryTooHard, Ten Minutes Longer and Micropolis) and has appeared at Novemberfest, The Quadrant Swansea, Dance Days at National Waterfront Museum, RawFfest Wales at Wales Millennium Centre and The Riverfront Newport, the National Festival of Youth Theatres Scotland and the Wales Theatre Awards. Ten Minutes Longer is the culmination of a partnership project with Frantic Ignition.

We want all our opportunities to be open to any young person who wants to take part, including people from lower socio-economic backgrounds. We believe our work is better when it includes people of all backgrounds and experiences. We actively seek to remove any barriers, including financial, that might prevent you accessing our work. Bursaries are available to cover the cost of fees and are simple to apply for. You’ll never be treated differently in VYC because you have applied for or received a bursary.
