OPENING LAUNCH FRIDAY 10 APRIL 6 – 8pm
“Many artists I know are wary of being labelled. But I have always felt comfortable about calling myself a Constructivist. My primary creative passion since the early 1970s has been the exploration of colour as an intense physical experience and later since the 1990s exploring colour as light compositions of transmitted or reflected light images that spill dynamically littering our urban–industrial landscapes.
I first exhibited my colour work in 1971 developing it in both two- and three-dimensional formats as exploratory environments of transmitted or reflected light, often being interpreted by dance and performances as an experimental public art supported by the Arts Council of GB . This work was constructed on an architectural scale developing aesthetic use of new flexible plastics and experimenting with programmed lighting techniques.
From 1989, having moved to South Wales, my work evolved as colour light scapes presented as digitized overlays of light images and as three-dimensional sculptural neon constructs. It has been and still is an exciting journey for the imagination exploring new sources of visual experience.
I count myself fortunate, that I was born into a meritocratic post-war era governed by the optimism of the newly established United Nations world order. From the 1950s onward, with Britain’s reconstruction we all benefited dramatically from the new welfare state. Our post-war society was very different from that before the two world wars, it became much more egalitarian and socialist and as a result of state education the Government started to recognize the importance of harnessing creativity and imagination as vital economic and social assets that could readily improve our well-being and enrich life for the majority population.
Unfortunately, since the late 1980s, with the advent of rabid globalization, worldwide trade and industrial exploitation, now controlled by the new mind-bending digital technologies, our world is in serious turmoil again. Not least, we are clearly causing extensive degradation of the planet threatening to rob future generations of the rich diversity and natural beauty which artists have fallen in love with and exhorted throughout history.”
