Volcano’s Artistic Director, Paul Davies, worked with Brazilian participants of the Reside Festival over a fortnight in March, on a digital residency entitled Which Way to the Waterfall.

Originally, Paul was meant to travel to Recife, in the north-eastern state of Pernambuco, to lead a residency programme, but as a result of COVID-19 he instead worked with Portuguese and sign-language translators, utilising a number of online platforms to ensure that the residency continued online.

This Residency is part of the Oi Futuro – British Council ‘Bridges’ programme, an unprecedented partnership between the two institutions, which aims to offer new alternatives to promote Brazilian festivals and to promote UK artistic production in Brazil.

Nearly a hundred videos were created by participants on subjects as diverse as Bolsonaro’s whining, the playwright Nelson Rodrigues, the emergence of memory and the meaning of the private spaces that we now occupy. A final compilation video of a selection of videos can be seen HERE
