One of Volcano’s new season of specially-commissioned original short performances in the Solo Duets for the Future series. Performed in The Bay at Volcano Theatre.
Every thousand years or so, Death tightens its grip on humanity. The first forces called to loosen it were Taió and Caiandê – the Afro-Brazilian twin Gods, or Orixás, whose enchanting song kept Death at bay. Since then, whenever Death’s power has grown too strong, new twins have been tasked with restoring nature’s balance.
Using movement, music and poetry, Buried Thunder’s Ibeji introduces a brand-new set of twins, one hundred years from now. After dancing with Death and subduing him once more, the new pair must decide upon three pillars for the new world to adopt if it is to move towards peace. As they hash out their plans, they call on the audience to share the message of their new dances and reconsider the pillars present in our own lives.
Buried Thunder are a physical theatre company passionate about new work. They devise original, fantastical work that fuses elements of dance, physical theatre and text. Making work for primarily young adults, we reinvigorate and reimagine archaic tales at risk of being lost or forgotten. With an element of outreach attached to every production they aim to Move through movement, Ignite imagination and Unearth buried stories.
Ibeji: The Twins who Danced with Death was created by Artistic Director Olivia Bourne and Associate Director Felipe Pacheco. It is performed by Olivia and company member Melina Koutsofta.

Buried Thunder are available for workshops. Their Essence Workshop – Making Physical Theatre Digital – offers an introduction to making a short movement film in just three hours. Aimed at students at KS5 or in Further and Higher Education.
